I love engineering, and I love cooking, and I love a website that gives recipes and instructions in a way familiar to me.
It's not a particularly big website, nor groundbreaking, but I like it. It makes some things really simple.
A web forum has a great discussion by a parent on how to blank the monitor if the kids are yelling too loudly. He manually SSHes into the computer to blank it from a nice vantage point, but enterprising linux folks offer automated solutions; when put into a script running in the background, it looks something like:
1234 | Record audio, analyze
Extract average (RMS) amplitude
Compare against threshold, take action of any
Sleep, repeat
